The EMDR Association UK in their Recommended Best Practise for Working with Children state that a child is considered anyone under the age of 18. As teenagers differ in their emotional and developmental age, it is recommended to be aware of how to modify EMDR to meet the child and adolescent where they are, in terms of their developmental and emotional age, rather than over focusing on chronological age.
In addition, if you are planning (or currently do) offer EMDR Therapy with children & adolescents, without having completed the Core (Level 1) Child & Adolescent EMDR Training with a Europe Accredited Child & Adolescent Trainer, you will be delivering EMDR against the advice of the Good Practice Guidelines for Working with Children & Adolescents (Child Committee – EMDR Association UK). You will also not be able to count any child you have delivered EMDR with towards accreditation as a Child & Adolescent EMDR Practitioner, if this might be of interest to you, until the Core (Level 1) EMDR Child & Adolescent Training is completed.
